Should I Become a Sales Manager or Remain a Sales Rep?

The only similarity between the words “sales rep” and “sales manager” is the word SALES.

As sales reps we’re selfish with our time because we’re focused on what’s our own. Our pipeline, our quota, and our commission.

Most everything we do is done on our own. And for good reason.

Sales managers are not selfish with their time.

They can’t close their office door. They can’t always work remotely. They have to be accessible.

They hit their sales targets through their reps, not alone.

A sales manager doesn’t have to be the ROCK STAR. They have to be the AGENT of rock stars.

Waste no time thinking about what a sales manager should be…

Just be one.

How Should I Structure My Selling Day?

How do I engage prospects? One call at a time.

How do I book meetings? One invite at a time.

How do I close deals? One offer at a time.

When I lay my sales bricks as perfectly as they can be… In time I’ll have a wall full of clients.

In a business world obsessed with speed, I never forget sales tasks of real worth and value take time.

How do I structure my workday to achieve these real worth tasks on time?

I spend 1/2 of my day doing. This means engaging prospects, booking meetings, and making offers = 3 hours morning

I spend 1/4 of my day studying. This means learning strategies, researching prospects, and preparing content = 1.5 hours early afternoon

I spend 1/4 of my day reflecting. This means reviewing what I’ve done and how I can get faster, better, smarter = 1.5 hours late afternoon

Total: 6 hours

When you lean into the discomfort of work, the dividends are huge.

Structuring your sales day

How Can I Bounce Back From A Lost Sale?

Frustrated because you just got a bunch of “no’s” from prospects?

Here’s how to bounce back:

1.) Stand up. Raise arms above head. Make a “V” shape.

2.) Stretch them high. Punch upward with both fists 10 times. Smiling or laughing yet?

Try with a coworker for double the fun.

Restart your outreach.

Why Is There A Sales Talent Shortage?

No wonder there’s a sales talent shortage…

Job seekers with zero experience are under threat. They’re offered unpaid internships.

Job seekers with 5+ years experience (with the same company) are under threat. They’ve got too much tenure.

Job seekers with 10+ years experience (at more than one company) are under threat. They’re either management material or unemployable.

Who’s left to hire, bots?

Sales reps…

Invest heavily in knowledge, skills and ability.

Few others will.

Job seekers are under threat

How Can I Tweak My Mindset For Cold Calling?

How Can I Tweak My Mindset For Cold Calling?

Here’s how:

When making cold calls, my goal is to get “no’s” not “yes’s.”

That’s right.

It’s foolish to worry about what I cannot control. So, why focus on “yes’s?”

So today, like every day…

I’ll set my target for 50 “no’s.”

When I do this a funny thing happens…

I NEVER reach 50.

Inevitably, my prospect will say on call 13, 27, or maybe even 49….

“Yes, I’d like to see how you solve that problem.”

When I make “yes’s” my goal, but get mostly “no’s”… I’m disappointed and defeated.

When I make “no’s” my goal, but get several “yes’s”… I’m surprised and inspired.

Of course, some might call me a pessimist.

Who cares?

The pragmatic seller is awarded president’s club.

The idealistic one gets a PIP.

In cold calling no's beat yes's

What’s the one question sales reps should ask themselves Monday mornings?

Ever ask yourself?

“Why did I choose to earn a living calling up strangers and asking them for money?

Is the answer?

“Because I absolutely love it!”

Or simply …

“Because it’s the one job I can do well that pays me the most.

“If the latter…

You’re not alone. Just keep going. Be stoic.

P.S: Whenever you’re ready… here’s how I can help you hire stoic sales reps so you’re business grows.

What is salesmanship?

Salesmanship is not a job.

You’re hired to close, not to show up, suck up, or go through the motions. Accept the latter and you’ll be soon shown the door.

Salesmanship is not shameless promotion.

You’re either solving problems or your noise. There’s nothing in between. Be a doctor not a carnival barker.

Salesmanship is not a steady paycheque.

You’ll earn fat commissions this quarter. Next quarter near nothing. Save for rainy days, or you’ll be desperate to close… and it shows.

Salesmanship understood correctly, is the cure for your company’s disease.

The disease is revenue insufficient-titus.

Who better to cure it than YOU.

What things can I control as a sales rep?

In sales there are some things I can control.

How I prepare.

How I respond.

How I follow up.

How hard I work.

Even still…

It’s unlikely I’ll get more than a disproportionate number of call backs from all the voice mails I’ll leave, emails I’ll send, or offers I’ll make.

This means I’m going to have to fight tooth and nail to close every single deal this year.

But before I get too hung up about my target, my attainment, and my job security… I remind myself of these three things:

First: Be grateful I’ve actually woken up, many people will not have this luxury today.

Second: Relentlessly prune non-revenue generating activities. It’s perfectly okay for me to be selfish of the few hours of selling time I have each day.

Third: Remind myself that the only things I can control are my thoughts and my actions. Things like the exact day my prospect decides to sign… are mostly beyond my control.

The wise seller does not complain about the things which he has not… but cherishes those which he has.

Whats in your control as a sales rep
